IEEE Code of Ethics

1. To accept responsibility in making engineering decisions consistent with the safety, health, and welfare of the public, and to disclose promptly factors that might endanger the public or the environment;

Strength

This is considered to be strength because it only means that each employee should accept his or her responsibility. This is similar with the professional codes under strengths that state “Codes educate the members of a profession about their professional obligations.”

2. To avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest whenever possible, and to disclose them to affected parties when they do exist;

Weakness

                I believed that this is a weakness because for me this is too general. This must be specific for an individual to understand thoroughly what this means. “Directives included in many codes tend to be too general and too vague.”

3. To be honest and realistic in stating claims or estimates based on available data;

Weakness

                I think this is a weakness for the company because for me being honest does not mean that you are realistic. Also, I don’t understand very well what this means. I consider this as “Codes are not always helpful when two or more directives conflict.”

4. To reject bribery in all its forms;

Strength

            For me, this is considered as strength because each individual should know what is right and what is wrong. This is similar with the code of ethics under strengths stating “Codes guide the members of a profession in ethical choices.” This code will help the person to remember what is morally the right thing to do and that is to act fairness.

5. To improve the understanding of technology, its appropriate application, and potential consequences;

Weakness

                I don’t think this is strength so I assume that this is again a weakness because this kind of sentence for me is not complete. I don’t understand much what this code means. “A professional code’s directives are never complete or exhaustive.”

6. To maintain and improve our technical competence and to undertake technological tasks for others only if qualified by training or experience, or after full disclosure of pertinent limitations;

Weakness

                I think this is a weakness because the code is vague and hard to understand by the individual. If I were on the part of the employee, I will be having a hard time to understand these lengthy words that for me has no substance. Directives included in many codes tend to be too general and too vague.”

7. To seek, accept, and offer honest criticism of technical work, to acknowledge and correct errors, and to credit properly the contributions of others;

Strength

                For me, the role of supervisor is to acknowledge correct errors and credit his or her efforts, the same with employee who needs to seek, accept criticisms form their supervisors. This “Codes educate the members of a profession about their professional obligations.”

8. To treat fairly all persons regardless of such factors as race, religion, gender, disability, age, or national origin;

Strength

            This is strength for the company because every person should treat well to all his or her colleagues no matter what they races are. This is the same with codes that is under strengths saying “Codes “sensitize” members of a profession to ethical issues and alert them to ethical aspects they otherwise might overlook.” Sometimes, we forgot that we are being judgmental when it comes to physical look of a person.

9. To avoid injuring others, their property, reputation, or employment by false or malicious action;

Strength

This is again IEEE strengths because this code reminds a person not to do harm to other people. This is similar with the codes under strengths that state “Codes inspire the members of a profession to behave ethically.”

10. To assist colleagues and coworkers in their professional development and to support them in following this code of ethics.

Strength

            For me, this is strength because it is against with this professional code under weakness that states “Codes can be self-serving for the profession.” We have the duty to help also other people in knowing what is right and wrong.
